Texas is known for its scorching summers, with the hottest reaching 120 degrees! With weather this hot, people are at higher risk of heat stroke, but having swimming made accessible can prevent this.
Unfortunately, a dip in the only public pool in the Black & Brown community becomes a luxury when the average wage is just $7.25 an hour and the pool charges $1-$2 per resident, per swim.
With swimming lessons priced at $35 each, both the pool and learning to navigate water safely are out of reach for many. This summer, let's change that! We're raising funds to cover pool admission for Tyler residents, offer free swim days, and provide scholarships for swimming lessons.
Why does this matter:
- In the summer of 2023, this pool served 250 swimmers a day. It remains a vital part of our community during the hottest times of the year.
- Since 2020, the drowning rate has jumped 30 percent among pre-school-age children, making swimming dangerous for our youth.
- The city of Tyler announced in May of 2024 that all youth, 18 & under, can ride the public transport for FREE to the pool & for a ride home. However, if our youth cannot afford entry, they cannot take advantage of this program.
- Texas is the second leading state for heatstroke related deaths every summer since 1999.
Our Goals:
- Cover pool admission costs for Tyler residents for the summer of 2024 on designated free swim days.
- Provide scholarships for swimming lessons to low income families & foster youth.
- Raise awareness about heat safety, the importance of staying hydrated, and the value of swimming skills.
